archetypes / the builder
fictional kin: Captain Raymond Holt
the builder
“There's a shape, and it serves you.”
Captain Raymond Holt · Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Explicit structure as a form of care. Deeply loving within a deliberate framework. Queer, precise, warm — the kind of person who writes the relationship manual and means every word of it.
natural pair
the anarchist →Builders and Anarchists rarely partner well in long-term frames, but they make each other sharper in community. The Builder names what the Anarchist is rejecting; the Anarchist questions what the Builder is assuming.
not to be confused with
Builders explicitly rank and structure; Keystones may not. You can be a Keystone without ever using the word "primary."
You believe that the best way to love many people is to be clear about what each relationship is. You use primary/secondary language, or anchor/satellite, or nesting/non-nesting — some framework, deliberately chosen, that tells everyone what they're in. To outside observers this can look like ranking. To you, it's care. Explicit structure is how you prevent the quieter cruelties of ambiguity — the kind that happen when people assume they're in the same relationship and aren't.
The Builder's work is keeping the structure responsive. Structures that start as care can calcify into rules that no longer serve the people inside them. The edge is regularly asking, "is this shape still what we want, or is it just what we agreed to?" Builders who stay curious about their own structures build remarkably durable relationships. Builders who don't can end up defending a shape after it's outlived its purpose.
