the nomad
“The ground is you.”
Jessica Jones · Jessica Jones
Fiercely autonomous, holds people at arm's length, capable of devotion without merging. The autonomy is a feature of her character, not a trauma response — even when the show examines both.
natural pair
the keystone →Nomads and Keystones often love each other because each represents something the other has chosen to live without. The challenge is not trying to convert each other.
not to be confused with
Nomads are independent; Hermits are private. A Nomad might be out everywhere and still live alone. A Hermit might live with a partner and still tell almost no one about it.
You don't need a nesting partner to feel rooted — because the root is you. Solo poly isn't a compromise for you; it's a design choice. You make your own major decisions, you own your own space (literally or figuratively), and you build deeply committed relationships that don't require merging lives to matter. Some people can't imagine this. You can't imagine any other way.
The Nomad's work is trust — specifically, trusting that autonomy and intimacy can coexist. A common Nomad trap is using independence as a shield against the vulnerability of being needed by someone. The edge is learning to let relationships matter without them having to reshape you. Nomads who get there are the people other poly folks quietly envy — committed, connected, and still fully themselves.
